Kitesurfing in Denmark in Autumn: Why September and October are the Best Months

If you're looking to go kitesurfing in autumn, you don't need to plan a long-haul trip. Denmark offers ideal conditions in September and October, with empty spots and consistent winds. Especially along the Danish Baltic coast, you'll find flat water spots that you usually only see in Brazil – with the added benefit of having the water mostly to yourself.

Ideal Wind Conditions and Pleasant Temperatures

Denmark in autumn is a paradise for kitesurfers. Statistically, autumn is a very windy season, with westerly winds often reaching 20 knots or more. The Baltic Sea, particularly the Danish South Sea around the island of Lolland, enjoys a dry and often sunny climate – perfect for enjoying the last warm days on the water.

The Baltic Sea's water is still warm from the summer months. A 4-5 mm wetsuit is usually sufficient, and you often won't need neoprene shoes or gloves. If you're sensitive to the cold, pack a neoprene jacket or hoody, as strong winds can bring windchill – just what you're hoping for as a kitesurfer!

Empty Spots and World-Class Flat Water on the Baltic Coast in Denmark

In Denmark, you'll encounter far fewer kites in the sky compared to other parts of Northern Europe. The coastline is long, and the population density is low, meaning more space and freedom for your kitesurfing experience! While the hotspots in Jutland (e.g., Hvide Sande, Ringkøbing Fjord) can get busy during the summer months, the Danish Baltic Sea remains relatively quiet, even in summer.

Our kite spot in Nakskov Fjord on Lolland is a real insider tip. Even on a "busy day," you'll see a maximum of 5-8 kites on the water. In September and October, you might even find yourself sharing the spot with just one other kitesurfer. The challenge then is more about finding someone to help launch or land your kite. That's why it's advisable to visit a kitesurf school or bring a buddy along.

The Danish Baltic Sea offers a variety of kite spots: from vast shallow water areas with mirror-smooth flat water that rivals world-class spots, to locations with impressive Baltic Sea waves – there's something for every kitesurfer here.

Experience Danish Culture and Relaxation After Kitesurfing

Danish culture values the Scandinavian way of life. After a kitesurfing session, you can warm up in one of the many public saunas. For example, at our kitesurf spot in Hestehovedet, there's a sauna right by the water, which you can use for a small fee.

Autumn in Denmark also invites you to slow down. As the weather cools, Danes make themselves cozy indoors. The Danish word "Hygge" perfectly describes this lifestyle. A kitesurf holiday in September or October offers the ideal mix of adrenaline on the water and relaxation in one of the many cozy holiday homes. With fewer tourists around, you have the chance to experience authentic Danish culture.

Great Value for Money in the Off-Season in autumn

Another advantage of traveling to Denmark in September and October is the excellent value for money. Accommodations are significantly cheaper than in the high season, and you can often find holiday homes with private hot tubs or saunas at attractive prices.

Camping site rates are also lower. Directly at our spot is the Nakskov Fjord Campsite, which rents out self-catering cabins in addition to standard pitches. With an indoor swimming pool, heated common rooms, and a sauna, you're well-prepared for autumn weather.

Even the journey can be cheaper in the off-season. If you're taking the Scandlines ferry from Puttgarden to Rødby, ticket prices are often lower in late summer and autumn, and you're more likely to snag a discounted early booking ticket.
