The Most Beautiful SUP and Kayak Tours in Nakskov Fjord on Lolland, Denmark

Discover an Island Paradise from the Water

Right in front of our surf school on Lolland lies a true natural gem: Nakskov Fjord. Calm, shallow waters, a collection of islands – each with its own character – and a rich bird and wildlife make this fjord a perfect spot for stand-up paddling and kayaking. And the best part? There’s something here for every level – from a quick afternoon paddle to a full-day adventure.

We’ve put together our favorite SUP and kayak routes for you – including distances, tips, and difficulty ratings.

⏱ Note: All distance and time estimates refer to one-way paddling at a relaxed pace.

1. Barneholm – The Perfect Beginner’s Loop

Barneholm is the first island you’ll reach from the kayak dock at Hestehovedet – and an ideal destination for a short, relaxed paddle. The route isn’t long and mostly runs through very shallow water. Perfect for getting comfortable on your board or in your kayak – or simply for a little break in nature. You’ll need to cross the main boating channel once, but after that, the whole route stays close to land and in calm conditions. Even with a light breeze, this tour is usually easy to manage.

📏 Distance: approx. 1.5 km

🕒 Duration: Kayak ~30 min | SUP ~45 min

🌊 Difficulty: Easy

⚠️ Watch out: Be cautious when crossing the main channel

2. Slotø – To the Old Castle Ruins

Slotø is a true gem of the fjord: The island is home to the remains of an old castle, which can be visited via the landing pier – the perfect spot for a break. The route there takes you over open, but mostly shallow water – scenic and beautiful, but a bit more demanding. Along the way, you’ll need to cross a motorboat channel. Because of the distance and open water, this tour is best done in calm weather and good visibility. If you're up for it, you can also paddle all the way around Slotø to extend the trip.

📏 Distance: approx. 3.5 km

🕒 Duration: Kayak 45–60 min | SUP 60–90 min

🌊 Difficulty: Moderate

⚠️ Tip: Watch the wind and boat traffic in the channel

3. Lindelse – Along the Dike

This route leads north from Hestehoved, following the dike – a great option in easterly winds, as you can stay close to the shore and paddle in shelter. The destination is the small harbor village of Lindelse, a peaceful spot for a break with a view over the fjord. The route is calm, varied, and well suited for both SUPs and kayaks. With a bit of luck, you might even spot porpoises along the way.

📏 Distance: approx. 4 km

🕒 Duration: Kayak 45–60 min | SUP 60–90 min

🌊 Difficulty: Easy to moderate

☕ Tip: The small dock in Lindelse is perfect for a relaxing stop

4. Vejlø – Nature & Peace

Vejlø is one of the larger islands in the fjord and a true place of peace and quiet. It may only be accessed via the small harbor – the northern tip is a protected nature reserve and may be paddled around, but not entered. The crossing is calm but slightly longer, so this tour is better suited for experienced paddlers in good weather conditions.

📏 Distance: approx. 4 km

🕒 Duration: Kayak approx. 60 min | SUP approx. 90 min

🌊 Difficulty: Moderate

🦆 Note: Nature reserve and private property– access only via the harbor

5. Enehøje – In the Footsteps of Peter Freuchen

Enehøje is the largest island in the fjord – wild, scenic, and rich in history. The famous polar explorer and writer Peter Freuchen once lived here, and his stories still seem to echo across the island. It also marks the highest elevation in the region (not much by Lolland standards, but still!), and the view from the island’s western cliffs is simply breathtaking.

The paddle to Enehøje is significantly longer and best suited for experienced paddlers in good weather – especially on a SUP. By kayak, it’s manageable, but allow plenty of time. As always: the northern tip is a protected nature reserve and must not be accessed.

📏 Distance: approx. 6–7.5 km

🕒 Duration: Kayak 1.5–2 hrs | SUP only for experienced paddlers

🌊 Difficulty: Advanced

📚 Tip: Enehøje has shelters where you can stay overnight

6. The Grand Round Tour – Hestehovedet → Slotø → Vejlø → Lindelse → Hestehovedet

For those who want to explore more than one island in the fjord, this round tour is the perfect full-day adventure – especially by kayak. It brings together all the nearby highlights of Nakskov Fjord – from the castle ruins on Slotø to the peaceful nature of Vejlø and Lindelse. The full route is around 17 km (round trip), taking you past several islands and offering stunning views throughout. The tour requires a bit of endurance, but also allows for plenty of breaks and rewards you with an unforgettable experience. Plan a full day and keep an eye on the weather conditions.

📏 Distance (round trip): approx. 17 km

🕒 Duration: Kayak approx. 4 hrs | SUP only for experienced paddlers

🌊 Difficulty: Advanced

⚠️ Tip: Plan to take breaks on the islands and at the Lindelse harbor

General Guidelines for Nature & Protected Areas

The entire Nakskov Fjord is a Natura 2000 area and a valuable ecosystem with many protected bird species. Some areas – such as the northern tips of Vejlø and Enehøje, as well as the small island Duoholm – are nature reserves and may not be entered. In general: Give nature priority – we are allowed to use and enjoy it, but not leave traces behind.

We inform our guests when renting SUPs or kayaks about which zones to be aware of – so that everyone can enjoy nature while also protecting it.
